The Jockey Club Joins 1/ST in Supporting SAFE Act to Protect Thoroughbreds and Advance Horse Racing Welfare

The Jockey Club has publicly endorsed the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act, joining 1/ST President Aidan Butler and other industry groups in advocating for this bipartisan legislation aimed at protecting Thoroughbreds and the future of horse racing. With over 225 co-sponsors, including Representatives Vern Buchanan and Jan Schakowsky, the SAFE Act seeks to ban horse slaughter and the transport of horses for slaughter, addressing critical welfare concerns within the sport. The Jockey Club is actively collaborating with animal welfare organizations and lobbying Congress to ensure the bill’s passage, emphasizing the importance of Thoroughbred safety and aftercare.

In addition to supporting the SAFE Act, The Jockey Club continues its longstanding commitment to Thoroughbred welfare through partnerships with groups like the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and the Thoroughbred Incentive Program, which provide care and career opportunities for horses after racing. The organization urges the Thoroughbred community to prioritize the wellbeing of horses, especially during peak interest periods such as the Triple Crown season, reinforcing that the safety and humane treatment of Thoroughbreds remain central to the sport’s integrity and future.
