The Southern Carriage Driving Society is set to host the 2025 South Australian combined driving championships at the Monarto Sporting Complex, showcasing the elegant and challenging equestrian sport of combined driving. This competition consists of three phases: dressage, demonstrating the horses’ training and obedience; the marathon, testing fitness and agility through obstacle courses; and the cones, a timed precision event navigating cone gates. Known as one of the oldest and most dangerous equestrian sports, combined driving has a rich history in Australia, highlighted by 11-time world champion Boyd Excell, who has helped revive national interest in the discipline.
The event will take place over Sunday and Monday, featuring local and interstate competitors, including very small equines (VSEs). Spectators are encouraged to attend free of charge, with limited refreshments available on-site. The championships promise an exciting weekend of fast-paced, skillful driving and horsemanship for both participants and viewers.
