Santa Anita Park will implement a new policy starting with its fall meet on September 26, denying computer-assisted wagering (CAW) accounts access to win pools within two minutes of post time. CAWs use advanced data analysis and high-speed betting technology to place large volumes of bets just before races begin, often causing significant last-minute odds shifts that have frustrated many bettors. This move aligns Santa Anita with tracks like Del Mar and the New York Racing Association, which have already adopted similar restrictions to curb dramatic late betting fluctuations.
The policy change follows incidents such as the July 26 race at Del Mar, where the horse Nanci Griffith’s odds dropped sharply from 18-1 to 6-1 due to CAW activity. Del Mar introduced its two-minute cutoff in late July to improve wagering fairness and the overall betting experience for fans both on-site and through simulcast or online platforms. CAW accounts currently contribute up to 30% of the total betting handle on Thoroughbred racing, highlighting their significant impact on the wagering landscape.
