San Rafael Back Country Horsemen Honored for Preserving Equestrian Trails and Promoting Public Land Access

The San Rafael Back Country Horsemen, a volunteer group in central Utah, have been recognized by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for their dedicated efforts to preserve and enhance outdoor recreational opportunities on public lands. Formed in 2006, the group focuses on maintaining trails, building horse-friendly campgrounds, and improving signage, all while working collaboratively with other user groups such as hikers, mountain bikers, and off-highway vehicle enthusiasts. Their work is especially important in the San Rafael Swell area, where large wilderness zones prohibit mechanized tools, making the use of horses essential for transporting materials and performing maintenance.

Their proactive and cooperative approach has earned them the BLM’s Outstanding Volunteer Group Award, highlighting their contributions beyond equestrian interests to benefit all public land users. The chapter’s strong partnerships with federal agencies and local governments facilitate their projects, which last year amounted to over $73,000 in volunteer labor. The San Rafael Back Country Horsemen exemplify the spirit of volunteerism by ensuring public lands remain accessible and enjoyable for diverse outdoor enthusiasts, reflecting a broader commitment to stewardship and community engagement.
