The San Diego Humane Society is conducting a large-scale rescue and investigation at Villa Chardonnay Horses With Wings, a 40-acre animal sanctuary near Julian, after discovering over 350 cats, 165 horses, and numerous other animals living in poor conditions. The operation, involving multiple humane societies and agencies, revealed many animals in need of urgent medical care, with some suffering severe injuries or neglect. While most animals have been transferred to other facilities for treatment, a small number in critical condition were euthanized.
The investigation follows years of scrutiny and was prompted by a bankruptcy filing requiring the transfer of all animals. Authorities served an 18-page search warrant uncovering widespread neglect, though criminal charges have not yet been announced. Officials emphasize the challenges of neglect cases, often stemming from well-intentioned but overwhelmed caretakers, and highlight the lack of a dedicated state agency to regulate such sanctuaries. The focus remains on providing proper care for the animals while legislative efforts aim to improve oversight.
