Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Forfar Closes After 40 Years, 33 Staff Made Redundant Due to Rising Costs

Redwings Horse Sanctuary, a well-known Scottish animal sanctuary in Forfar, Angus, has permanently closed after more than 40 years, resulting in 33 staff redundancies. The closure follows a financial review amid rising operational costs for managing the large estate and was announced alongside the shutdown of their visitor centre in Warwickshire. The sanctuary, originally founded as Mountains Animal Sanctuary in 1982 and merged with Redwings in 2014, will relocate its rescued horses, ponies, and donkeys to its centre in Norfolk, England. Despite the closures, Redwings emphasized that their ability to rescue horses nationwide remains unaffected.

Chief Executive Lynn Cutress explained that escalating costs and the depletion of financial reserves over the past four years made the closures necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of the charity. She noted that the charity sector, including Redwings, is facing severe financial challenges due to rising expenses. The Norfolk and Essex visitor centres will continue operating as usual, and affected staff have been offered support to find alternative employment. The charity remains committed to caring for over 1,000 rescued equines and continuing its rescue work across the UK.
