Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria highlighted the importance of preserving the traditional Punjab breed of horses during the Punjab Horse Breed Heritage Show in Patiala. He praised the event for promoting awareness among the younger generation about the region’s equine heritage and referenced historical and mythological ties to horses, emphasizing their longstanding role in Indian culture, warfare, and law enforcement. Kataria expressed concern over the gradual extinction of several horse breeds and stressed the need to protect indigenous breeds like Punjab and Kathiawari.
The governor also acknowledged the dedication of horse breeders, noting that horse rearing is both a challenging and potentially lucrative endeavor, with some horses valued in crores of rupees. He appreciated the efforts of Prof Sumaer Singh Sira, the event organizer, who affirmed their commitment to saving the Punjab breed. The show featured horses from across Punjab, underscoring a collective mission to preserve this significant aspect of the region’s heritage.
