Poker for Ponies Tournament Raises Funds for Thoroughbred Aftercare Charities During Derby Week

The Poker for Ponies tournament, initiated just two weeks before the Kentucky Derby two years ago by Chelsey and John Stewart, has rapidly grown into a significant charitable event supporting Thoroughbred aftercare organizations. Starting with about 40 players and raising $200,000 for 20 charities, the event expanded last year to raise over half a million dollars for 50 charities. This year, the tournament is streamlined to support 10 accredited aftercare charities, with players randomly assigned to represent each charity, ensuring every organization receives a minimum donation. The event, held during Derby week at the Omni Hotel in Louisville, features various sponsorship levels and includes live streaming to raise awareness about the vital work these charities do in retraining and caring for retired racehorses.

The Stewarts’ commitment to equine welfare extends beyond the tournament through their own charity, Racing to Rescue, which focuses on rehabilitating horses rescued from kill pens. They also maintain a philosophy of responsibility in their racing program by offering support to new owners for horses that need retirement and retraining. Chelsey Stewart encourages industry stakeholders to participate and sponsor the event, emphasizing that all proceeds go directly to aftercare charities, making a meaningful impact on the lives of retired racehorses. This year’s selected charities include well-known organizations such as New Vocations, Mareworthy, and Old Friends, highlighting the broad support network for equine aftercare.
