Lia McCarthy, a senior midfielder for Shepard’s girls soccer team, is a standout athlete who balances her passion for soccer with competitive show jumping in equestrian events. Coming from a family deeply connected to horses, McCarthy plans to attend the University of Montana in the fall, continuing her equestrian interests. On the soccer field, she is a key player and leader, recently helping Shepard secure a 2-1 victory over Argo, contributing both a goal and an assist. Her 19th goal of the season underscored her importance to the team, with coach Dan Cordes praising her versatility, leadership, and consistent impact.
McCarthy’s athletic background also includes hockey, which she credits for enhancing her physicality and competitiveness in soccer. As a three-year captain, she reflects on her high expectations and growth throughout her four-year varsity career, feeling a mix of emotions as her final regular season concludes. Despite early-season frustrations, she is optimistic about the team’s progress and her own legacy, embracing both her love for soccer and the unique community she’s found through equestrian sports.
