On March 20, the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) served a search warrant at Rock N Pawz Animal Rescue in Lake Hughes for violations of animal welfare laws. Initially, it was estimated that around 700 dogs and cats would be rescued, marking one of the largest animal seizures in U.S. history. Over 70 staff and multiple partner agencies were involved in the operation, with animals triaged on-site and transported to care centers as needed. The rescue effort strained DACC’s resources, prompting them to open shelters on Sunday, March 22, and seek public support for adoption and donations.
By 5 p.m. on the same day, after a thorough assessment, the number of animals rescued was revised downward to approximately 250 dogs and 66 cats. While the situation remains a significant challenge, DACC expressed relief that the number was lower than initially feared. Rock N Pawz, the rescue organization involved, has not commented on the seizure but describes itself as a compassionate Southern California animal rescue dedicated to adoption, spay/neuter programs, and public awareness.
