Shalvin Shavnil Kumar, a schoolteacher from Labasa, graduated with a Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of the South Pacific’s Laucala Campus while caring for his pregnant wife, Sheema Lata, who is due to give birth soon. Despite the challenges of pregnancy and hospital visits, Ms. Lata supported Kumar throughout his studies, allowing him to balance his academic and personal responsibilities. Kumar is the first in his family to earn a law degree and is now enrolled as a PhD student in human rights law at USP.
Kumar, who already holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Graduate Certificate in Education, and a Bachelor of Laws, has been teaching in Labasa while completing his master’s degree part-time. He has recently started teaching at USP and plans to move to Suva for a full-time lecturing role. Emphasizing perseverance, Kumar encourages others to maintain hope and determination in pursuing their goals, reflecting his own steady academic progress and commitment to furthering his education.
