Horses for Handicapped Program Offers Unique Experience to 550 Participants in Rankin County

The Horses for Handicapped program in Rankin County, now in its 46th year, is providing a special experience for about 550 children and adults with disabilities from across Mississippi. Held at the Rankin County Multi Purpose Pavilion Horse Park in Brandon, the event runs from Monday through Thursday and features horseback riding, wagon rides, a petting zoo, games, and other activities. The all-volunteer program involves around 225-250 volunteers, including many students, who help create a supportive community atmosphere that emphasizes the importance and value of the participants.

Participants come from over 30 counties and 90 schools and development centers, making it a statewide gathering focused on fun and inclusion. Sharon Perry, president of Horses for Handicapped, highlights the event’s smooth operation and the strong sense of community it fosters. Dedicated horsemen and women also contribute by providing horses and managing the riding and loading operations, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
