Last week, viral body-cam footage showed an NYPD officer on horseback chasing down a purse snatcher in Manhattan, highlighting not only the officer’s bravery but also the remarkable journey of the horse, Kelly. Kelly is a retired standardbred racehorse rescued from slaughter in 2020 by the Standardbred Retirement Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to saving racehorses at the end of their careers. After rehabilitation, Kelly was trained by the NYPD Mounted Unit and has since become a stellar partner in law enforcement.
The Standardbred Retirement Foundation, based in New Jersey, rescues hundreds of horses annually, many of which would otherwise face slaughter. While Kelly’s story is a success, the foundation emphasizes the ongoing need for donations and resources to save the many more horses still at risk. Their work highlights the importance of giving retired racehorses a second chance at life and meaningful roles beyond the track.
