From Novice Rider to Assistant Trainer: Izzi Velinsky’s Journey Through Nebraska’s Equestrian Team

Izzi Velinsky’s lifelong passion for horses, sparked in childhood but limited by early opportunities, found new life at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Initially drawn to veterinary medicine, her involvement with Nebraska’s Equestrian Team and mentorship from the former coach shifted her focus to horse training and animal science. Through dedication, she advanced from a non-competitive team member to competing nationally in reining and Western horsemanship, while gaining hands-on experience in horse care, competition operations, and business aspects via the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program.

Velinsky’s practical experience, including internships with Oklahoma horse trainer Todd Crawford, led to a full-time assistant trainer position after graduation. She credits the Equestrian Team and her education for building her skills, confidence, and connections, helping her transition from a novice college rider to a professional in the industry. Though uncertain about the future, Velinsky feels her path is clear and purposeful, driven by the opportunities and mentorship she received during her university years.
