The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office in Montana is reviving its historic use of horses by establishing a mounted patrol unit, enhancing their ability to patrol areas inaccessible to vehicles such as state lands and trails. This addition not only supports search and rescue operations in remote or weather-challenged conditions but also improves crowd control by providing officers with elevated visibility to anticipate and manage potential issues. The unit, currently training horses and deputies to build trust and effective communication, aims to integrate the horses safely into law enforcement scenarios.
This initiative blends law enforcement with Montana’s rich western heritage, fostering community connection through the presence of horses. The mounted patrol team consists of three deputies and a sergeant who have completed specialized training, with all horses personally owned and cared for off duty. Undersheriff Luke Foster highlights that this new capability expands the sheriff’s office’s operational reach and effectiveness, marking an exciting development for the agency.
