Fernie’s Second Annual Ponies and Planks Skijoring Fundraiser Returns to Town in February

Fernie’s second annual Ponies and Planks skijoring fundraiser is set to take place on February 15 at the Lion’s Club derby grounds. Last year’s event drew 3,800 spectators and raised $40,000 for therapeutic horseback riding and equine-assisted learning. This year’s event will feature larger jumps and a larger berm at the end of the course, with 53 teams signed up to participate so far.

The event will feature skiers and boarders being pulled by galloping horses as they race down a snowy course, showcasing their most impressive tricks and jumps. Proceeds from last year’s event helped subsidize 2,500 therapeutic riding sessions for adults and children at all levels, providing key support for mental health and people with disabilities. The event will be divided into two divisions, with prizes awarded to the top three teams in each group.

Attendees are encouraged to wear western-themed clothing or vintage ski outfits, with gates opening at 11 a.m. and the event starting at 11:30. There will be food, a beer garden, and surprise intermission entertainment, with an after-party hosted by the Fernie Taphouse. Admission for spectators is $20 for adults, $10 for youth age 10-17, and free for children under 10. Riders, skiers, and boarders can participate for free by registering on the Freedom Equine Association website.
