The independent crime-reporting charity Crimestoppers has launched a campaign ahead of the 250th Appleby Horse Fair, Europe’s largest gathering of gypsies and travellers held annually in Appleby-in-Westmorland. The campaign urges the public to anonymously report any knowledge of planned serious crimes linked to the event, aiming to prevent incidents and ensure the safety of attendees. Crimestoppers guarantees complete anonymity and passes all information securely to law enforcement and relevant partners, including the RSPCA for animal welfare concerns.
The Appleby Horse Fair attracts thousands of visitors each June, and while most attend lawfully, the potential for crime exists at such large gatherings. Cumbria Police will also deploy Live Facial Recognition vans at this year’s event to enhance security measures. Reports can be submitted online or via a freephone number, reinforcing the charity’s commitment to community safety and crime prevention.
