Concerns Raised Over Plans to Extend Pet Crematorium for Horse Incineration Near Ystradgynlais

Plans to extend a pet crematorium at Pensarn Farm near Ystradgynlais to include a larger incinerator for horse cremations have raised environmental concerns. The proposal, submitted to Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority, aims to meet growing demand for equine cremation services while supporting the existing business and local employment. The extension would involve adding an “Ad Enviable” incinerator and a temporary office pod, with assurances that no commercial livestock cremation will occur.

However, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has expressed objections due to insufficient information about the potential environmental impact, particularly given the site’s proximity—just 60 meters—to the Rhos Hen-Glyn-Isaf Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), which is sensitive to air quality changes. NRW has requested further details, including possibly an Air Quality Assessment, and indicated that an Environment Permit may be required depending on the incinerator’s size. The consultation period for the application closes on August 20.
