Coal, a Black Bear Cub, Rescued by New York State Police and Wildlife Center

On April 16, 2026, a passerby spotted a baby black bear cub alone on West Ava Road in the Town of Ava, New York, causing a traffic hazard. Sergeant Station Commander Richard Kosakowski of the New York State Police Troop D responded and rescued the cub, transferring it to DEC Officer Jeff Hull, who was nearby on fishing patrol.

Officer Hull then brought the bear cub, named Coal, to the Woodhaven Wildlife Center in Chadwicks, where Judy Cusworth, the center’s founder and director, took custody of the animal. The coordinated efforts of local authorities and wildlife experts ensured the safe rescue and care of the cub.
