Herefordshire Council and Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion have awarded £50,000 in grants to nine local organizations to fund inclusive activities for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). These activities include horse riding, disability cricket, assisted roller-skating, outdoor adventure days, autism-friendly race days, youth support, play opportunities, and residential stays. The program aims to provide fun, confidence-building sessions in safe, supportive environments that help participants develop new skills, make friends, and foster independence outside of school or college.
The funding has already made a positive impact, with Autism in Racing successfully hosting two Autism Friendly Race Days at Hereford Racecourse, offering SEND families a calmer, more accessible day out. Parents have reported feeling more relaxed, included, and supported, highlighting the importance of such tailored activities. Councillor Ivan Powell and Commissioner John Campion emphasized the value of these programs in helping children with SEND enjoy inclusive, enjoyable experiences that contribute to their personal growth and future development.
