Wild Horses at Risk: Increasing Vehicle Incidents Threaten Corolla’s Outer Banks Icons

The northern Outer Banks, particularly Carova, is known for its wild horses that have lived there for generations, coexisting with visitors who drive on the four-wheel drive beach area. However, this summer has seen troubling incidents of horses being struck by vehicles, including fatal hit-and-runs. Chris Winter, president and CEO of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, highlights that while negative human interactions like feeding or approaching horses have decreased, vehicle-related incidents have unfortunately increased, often involving illegal behaviors such as speeding and drunk driving.

Winter emphasizes that protecting these wild horses requires personal responsibility from both locals and tourists, alongside increased law enforcement presence on the beach to deter dangerous driving. The horses are a vital part of the Outer Banks’ cultural heritage, and efforts must continue to ensure their safety and preservation for future generations. The community and authorities are actively seeking solutions to balance human activity with the protection of these iconic animals.
