A wild horse was reportedly struck by a speeding pickup truck on July 4 around 9 p.m. on Ocean Pearl Road in Carova, N.C., according to witnesses and the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. Although the horse initially fell, it got up and fled into the brush, with the driver failing to stop. Law enforcement was called, and the Wild Horse Fund conducted a search of the area, eventually identifying a stallion with a swollen shoulder believed to be the injured horse. The horse is reportedly recovering well, showing no signs of internal injuries, and the Fund is monitoring its progress.
The Corolla Wild Horse Fund emphasized the rarity of such survival, noting that in the past decade only two horses have survived vehicle strikes, with most incidents involving speed or alcohol. The Fund condemned reckless driving behavior, highlighting the danger it poses to the wild horse herd, other wildlife, and people. It reminded the public that it is illegal in Currituck County to injure a wild horse without reporting it and urged anyone involved in or witnessing such incidents to immediately contact law enforcement and the Fund.
