Visually Impaired Horse Rescued from Frozen Pond in Memphis

Joey, a visually impaired horse who is blind in one eye, was rescued after falling through a frozen pond in Shelby County, Tennessee. After slipping twice on icy terrain, Joey became trapped in the frigid water for about an hour, risking hypothermia. The Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) quickly intervened, breaking the ice and safely extracting him. Despite the ordeal, Joey remained surprisingly calm throughout the rescue and is now recovering at Memphis Animal Services.

Joey’s owners, who previously rescued him from Fayette County, plan to bring him home once the ice fully melts to prevent further accidents. Jessie Sidle of Memphis Animal Services emphasized the importance of secure fencing and teamwork in protecting animals during harsh winter conditions. Joey continues to eat and drink normally, and his story highlights the dedication of rescue teams and animal caretakers in emergency situations.
