Valegro, the legendary dressage horse who helped British rider Charlotte Dujardin secure three Olympic gold medals—including two individual titles at the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Games—has died at age 23. Valegro became the most decorated dressage horse in British history, also winning multiple golds at the World Equestrian Games and European Championships. Dujardin paid an emotional tribute to her iconic partner on Instagram, reflecting on their unique bond and shared success.
Valegro’s passing coincided with Dujardin’s recent one-year ban from the sport following an investigation into her conduct. Carl Hester, another prominent British dressage figure, also announced the death of Uthopia, Valegro’s stablemate and fellow 2012 Olympic gold medalist, who died at 24. Hester praised both horses for their immense contributions to British dressage, calling their era a golden one that inspired many and expressing gratitude for being able to let them pass with dignity.
