Usha, a 3-year-old filly by Tiz the Law, captured her first Grade I victory in the La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita, marking the first Grade I winner for her sire. After a promising debut and some early challenges competing against top stablemates, Usha showed significant improvement following a nine-month layoff. Under trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Juan Hernandez, she overcame a tough trip, splitting rivals late to win convincingly by over five lengths in a time of 1:21.68 for seven furlongs.
Purchased for $600,000 as a two-year-old, Usha is out of Animal Appeal, a stakes-placed mare with modest sales history, making Usha her most accomplished offspring. The filly’s performance highlights the potential of Tiz the Law’s second crop, which has produced several graded stakes winners. Baffert credited the filly’s calm demeanor and the barn’s management for her breakthrough, while Hernandez praised her talent and composure in the race.
