Erin Frost, a genetics graduate from UKZN, has completed her MSc research on the genetic diversity of South Africa’s indigenous and rural horse breeds, highlighting their cultural, economic, and ecological importance. Supervised by Dr Edgar Farai Dzomba, her work addresses threats such as extinction and crossbreeding by characterizing the unique genetic traits of breeds like the Basotho pony. Frost’s research fills a gap in genomic studies of these underrepresented horses, emphasizing their resilience and multifunctional roles in both commercial and smallholder farming contexts.
Passionate about horses from a young age, Frost’s academic journey at UKZN was shaped by her interest in equine genetics, which evolved during her honours year. Looking ahead, she plans to pivot towards marine genetics, aiming to contribute to conservation efforts in marine biodiversity through advanced genomic technologies. She credits her success to the support of family, mentors, and inspiring women in science, encouraging aspiring researchers to persevere despite challenges in South Africa’s economic landscape.
