Trial Begins for Nathan Chasing Horse, Former “Dances with Wolves” Actor, on Sexual Abuse Charges

Nathan Chasing Horse, a former actor known for his role in “Dances with Wolves,” faces trial in Las Vegas on multiple charges including sexual assault, kidnapping of a minor, and producing child pornography. Prosecutors allege that Chasing Horse exploited his status as a self-proclaimed Lakota medicine man and spiritual leader to abuse Indigenous women and girls over two decades, including filming himself with a minor. The case, which has faced legal setbacks, gained renewed attention after charges were refiled in 2024 following a Nevada Supreme Court ruling that dismissed the original indictment due to procedural issues.

The trial highlights difficult issues within Native communities regarding violence and accountability, as Chasing Horse is accused of leading a cult-like group called The Circle and manipulating victims who sought his healing ceremonies. The case has sparked conversations about addressing abuse perpetrated by Indigenous individuals and the need for justice within these communities. Jury selection began in October 2024, with prosecutors planning to call 18 witnesses over a four-week trial.
