Trenton Legislative Update: Assembly Introduces New Bills and Recent Laws Signed Into Effect

On January 2, 2026, the New Jersey Senate did not meet and is scheduled to reconvene on January 6, 2026. Meanwhile, the Assembly held a quorum session where several bills were introduced, covering topics such as motor vehicle dealer licenses, horse racing dates, special education funding, firearm sales regulation, economic redevelopment grants, tax credits for sports and entertainment projects, privacy protection, and law enforcement relations with immigrant communities. Additionally, the Assembly received multiple bills from the Senate for second reading or committee referral, addressing issues like pesticide disposal, social services expansion, health insurance coverage, veteran tax exemptions, and public safety enhancements.

No bills were passed by both houses or sent to the governor on this date. However, since the last session on December 22, 2025, several bills have been signed into law, including measures on mental health service analysis, affordable housing directories, guardianship complaints for minors, public works contract wage protections, chronic absenteeism task force establishment, environmental infrastructure funding, historic preservation grants, and land acquisition for recreation and conservation purposes. The Assembly adjourned on January 3, 2026, with plans to meet again on January 5, 2026.
