Thrift Shop Staff in Wyoming Discover 1904 Police Docket Documenting Historical Crimes

Staff at a thrift shop in Casper, Wyoming discovered a 315-page, red leather-bound police docket dating back to 1904 while rummaging through donations. The docket documented historical crimes in Casper, noting fines for offenses such as keeping a house of prostitution and riding a horse while intoxicated on horseback. The docket has been returned to the City of Casper and the Casper Police Department.

The discovery was shared on Facebook by the Wyoming Rescue Mission, with Casper Police Chief Keith McPheeters emphasizing the importance of preserving the organization’s history. The National Archives maintains historical Law Enforcement Records, including federal law enforcement agencies and courts from the 1790s to the early 2000s. The find offers a glimpse into early crimes and daily occurrences faced by police officers at the time.

Wyoming Rescue Mission Community Engagement Coordinator Adam Flack noted that while many challenges remain the same, such as disturbances of the peace and carrying deadly weapons, some offenses like “riding while intoxicated” likely no longer refer to horseback. Executive Director Brad Hopkins praised the thrift store staff for recognizing the historic treasure, and the Casper Police Department will ensure the record of their history is preserved with honor and dignity.
