Lynn and Paul Cairney founded Thor and Athena’s Promise Sanctuary in 2015 to provide a permanent, loving home for elderly and abused horses, many of whom suffered from neglect, hard labor, or pharmaceutical exploitation. Unlike typical rescues focused on rehabilitation for adoption, their sanctuary offers lifelong care, medical attention, and a spacious environment for horses to thrive. The couple, who cover most expenses themselves and rely on volunteers, also use the sanctuary as a therapeutic space, helping Paul cope with PTSD and supporting community groups, including displaced families and seniors.
Their passion extends beyond horses to elderly people, particularly those with early-stage dementia. The Cairneys are involved in the Connected Horse Dementia Project, aiming to reduce anxiety and strengthen relationships between seniors and their caregivers through guided horse interactions. They hope to establish their sanctuary as a pilot site for this free program, emphasizing that both elderly horses and senior citizens deserve dignity, care, and connection.
