East Bernstadt Fire and Rescue has welcomed a new member to their team, a 6-month-old Dalmatian named Tiller. The addition of Tiller serves as a morale booster, stress relief, and a way to engage with the community. Dalmatians have a long history of being associated with firefighters, dating back to their role in alerting people to the arrival of horse-drawn fire engines.
The tradition of Dalmatians being part of fire departments dates back to the 18th century when they ran alongside horse-drawn stage coaches to protect them from highway robbers. In the 19th century, they were recruited by firefighters to accompany horses hauling water pumps. Today, Dalmatians like Tiller play a role in community outreach and education, as well as providing a calming presence for firefighters who face a stressful job.
East Bernstadt Fire and Rescue, a department with just over 20 volunteers, responded to over 400 calls this year, including the chaotic I-75 shooting in September. While Tiller has been a valuable addition to the team, deputy chief Frank Votolato emphasizes the ongoing need for volunteers and encourages the public to consider getting involved with their local fire stations.
