Olympic show jumper ‘GL’ ‘FVD’ (Ollie) and rider Niamh McEvoy have recently achieved significant international success, including a CSI4* Grand Prix win and a clear round in the Longines League of Nations. Central to Ollie’s rise has been the careful, patient development by producer Elaine O’Neill of Ballyfore Sporthorses, who was the only person to ride Ollie before his move to Ballypatrick Stables. Elaine sourced Ollie as a three-year-old and nurtured his natural talent and sensitive temperament through a slow, confidence-building process emphasizing groundwork, pole work, and routine turnout, always prioritizing his mental and physical readiness over rushing his progression.
By age seven, Ollie began competing successfully in Grand Prix classes, steadily building confidence and skill through the Irish system and age-class competitions. After a strong nine-year-old season, he transitioned to Ballypatrick for McEvoy to take over, gaining exposure to top international shows. Elaine highlights that beyond talent, a five-star horse needs heart, trust in their rider, and time to develop properly. Her key advice for producing show jumpers is patience—allowing horses to progress at their own pace rather than pushing them prematurely—an approach that transformed Ollie from a nervous youngster into a world-class athlete.
