Sisters Angelica and Abigail Traylor showcased their horsemanship skills at the fifth annual Texas 4-H Homes for Horses competition on July 23, 2025, taking first and second place respectively in the under-saddle category. Both have been involved in 4-H since early childhood and were paired with adoptable horses from the ASPCA Right Horse Adoption Partner program. Angelica trained Gus, a 16-year-old Paint/Quarter gelding, while Abigail rode Her Majesty, a 10-year-old mare she later adopted. Their achievements earned them scholarships and highlighted the program’s mission to rehabilitate at-risk horses while teaching youth valuable life skills.
The Texas 4-H Homes for Horses program, supported by grants from the ASPCA Right Horse and Texas 4-H Foundation, matches vulnerable horses with young riders to foster training, care, and adoption. This year’s all-female lineup of five Texas youths demonstrated dedication to equine welfare and horsemanship, with additional winners including Avery Provost, Marley Kirbow, and Audra Peters. The program not only improves horse welfare but also provides participants with hands-on experience in horse ownership, training, and care, contributing to Texas’s leadership in the U.S. horse population and promoting a culture of responsibility and service among young equestrians.
