Strong Community Support at BLM Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Event at Deerwood Ranch

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) hosted a well-attended Wild Horse and Burro adoption event on June 14 at Deerwood Ranch near Laramie, Wyoming, drawing around 300 visitors from Wyoming and Colorado. The event featured 25 animals—20 young horses from the Rock Springs facility and five gelded burros from Nebraska’s Elm Creek corral—with six animals adopted or sold by day’s end. Attendees enjoyed wagon rides, vendor booths, local food, and opportunities to connect with wild horses and burros, while past adopters shared success stories and helped support the event.

BLM specialist Monica Mohr highlighted the event’s role in fostering public connection to the heritage and care of these iconic animals. Since 1971, nearly 290,000 wild horses and burros have been placed into private care through BLM programs, which help maintain healthy herds on public lands. The Deerwood Ranch event exemplified community engagement and the ongoing effort to preserve the spirit of the American West through adoption. More information on future events is available on the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Adoption and Sale Events webpage.
