A mute swan in Ulverston, Cumbria, became trapped in a canal overflow drain along with a rival swan after a fight, prompting a dramatic rescue. Locals spotted the birds stuck with their heads protruding from the drain hole and called specialist rescuer Caroline Simms, who used a canoe to reach and free both swans. The rescue was witnessed by staff at the nearby Bay Horse Hotel and Restaurant, who praised Simms’ skill in balancing on a kayak to haul the birds out.
Swans are common in the area, with local groups monitoring their welfare. Earlier incidents include a swan causing a traffic stop on the M1 after mistaking the road for water. Fortunately, these birds are unharmed in such events and are safely returned to nearby lakes. The recent rescue highlights ongoing community efforts to protect and assist local wildlife.
