Spanish Town Temporarily Bans Black Cat Adoptions to Prevent Halloween Ritual Abuse

In Terrassa, a town near Barcelona, authorities have temporarily banned the adoption and fostering of black cats from October 1 to November 10 to protect them from potential harm during Halloween. This precautionary measure aims to prevent the cats from being used in superstitious rituals or as decorative props, as adoption requests for black cats tend to spike around Halloween for these reasons. Animal welfare groups have raised concerns that black cats can be hurt or killed during such practices.

The ban, announced by the town’s animal welfare service, allows exceptions only when applicants have a reliable history and can guarantee the cats’ safety. The normal adoption process will resume after Halloween, with the possibility of similar future bans. Terrassa, which is home to nearly 10,000 cats, took this step following advice from animal protection entities to address the risks posed by Halloween-related superstitions.
