Smarty Jones, the celebrated Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner from 2004, is finally being inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame on August 1, 21 years after his remarkable racing career captured global attention. Bred and raced by Pat and Roy Chapman, and currently residing at Equistar Training and Breeding in Pennsylvania, Smarty Jones remains active and beloved at 24 years old. His induction will be celebrated with an event at Equistar on August 9, where fans can meet the champion and other stallions. Beyond his racing legacy, Smarty Jones played a significant role in boosting Pennsylvania’s horse racing industry and helped influence the passage of slot machine legislation that increased purse money and supported local tracks.
Equistar Training and Breeding, led by Rodney Eckenrode, who has cared for Smarty Jones since 2018, has transitioned from Arabian horses to Thoroughbreds, standing several notable stallions including Smarty Jones and newer stars like Brody’s Cause and Zozos. Despite a nationwide decline in foal crops and mare breeding, Smarty Jones helped spark increased breeding interest in Pennsylvania following his success. Eckenrode emphasizes the importance of preserving proven bloodlines like Smarty Jones’ amid the commercial market’s focus on newer stallions, and credits the farm’s loyal clientele for supporting their breeding program over the years.
