Six horses consigned by Mulholland Springs at the Fasig-Tipton July Horses of Racing Age Sale represent the estate of the late Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who passed away at 89. Known for his keen eye in selecting top racehorses, Lukas personally chose each horse in the consignment, including promising 2-year-olds Summer Date and Lost Valley. Mulholland Springs, longtime friends with Lukas and sharing a Quarter Horse background, expressed both pride and sadness in offering these horses, highlighting their quality and Lukas’s lasting impact on the industry.
Lukas revolutionized Thoroughbred racing from the 1970s onward, achieving numerous accolades including 15 Triple Crown race wins, 20 Breeders’ Cup victories, and induction into the Hall of Fame in 1999. The consignment also features notable horses like Going Steady, a maiden winner and half-sister to a promising 2-year-old, and stakes-placed gelding Waco, a half brother to graded stakes-placed Flying Private. Mulholland praised Lukas as a transformative figure and a personal hero, thanking Fasig-Tipton for facilitating the smooth dispersal of his estate’s horses.
