Sanele Mchunu has made history as the first black person to announce horse races in isiZulu on South African national television, marking a significant milestone in the horse racing industry’s representation. Originating from Mpophomeni in Howick, Mchunu was hired by Race Coast and will announce at the prestigious Hollywoodbets Durban July on July 5, symbolizing both personal achievement and progress toward greater inclusivity in the sport. Since starting this role in 2023, he has become a regular voice in horse racing and advocates for increased Black South African participation beyond major events, highlighting the industry’s vast employment potential.
Mchunu’s journey began in local schools before studying Video Technology at Durban University of Technology, leading to a media career starting in 2006 with the SABC and later roles at SuperSport TV and Gallop TV. Now a studio producer and father of three, he continues to break barriers and inspire future generations of broadcasters and horse racing professionals, emphasizing the importance of diversity and opportunity within the sport.
