Ruidoso Downs Cancels 2025 Racing Season After Devastating Flooding

The city of Ruidoso, New Mexico, and its surrounding areas suffered severe flooding on July 8 due to heavy monsoonal rains, compounding damage from last summer’s wildfires and flash floods. The floods caused three deaths and significantly impacted homes, businesses, and the Ruidoso Downs Quarter Horse racetrack. The Rio Ruidoso river rose to a record 20 feet, flooding the track’s racing surface and stable areas, with horses caught in rising waters. In response, Ruidoso Downs canceled the 2025 racing season as assessments of the damage continue, leaving the future of major events like the All American Futurity uncertain.

The flooding was worsened by wildfire burn scars that reduced rainfall absorption, and the racetrack’s riverside location makes it vulnerable to recurring floods. Officials praised the quick response of staff and veterinarians who helped rescue and treat injured horses. Given the ongoing risk, some question whether the racetrack’s location is sustainable for the safety of horses and people. Last year’s flooding had already forced racing to relocate to Albuquerque, and this year Ruidoso Downs had limited racing to Quarter Horses only, anticipating challenges in fully restoring the track.
