RSPCA Victoria Rescues Over 580 Animals in Challenging Start to 2026

Since the start of 2026, RSPCA Victoria has rescued over 580 animals, marking a 24% increase compared to the previous year. The rescues include nearly 100 kittens, more than 170 cats, 120 dogs, and various other animals such as horses, chickens, and turtles. Many animals were found in dire conditions, often due to hoarding, abandonment, and lack of desexing, suffering from health issues like starvation, fleas, and infections. Notably, inspectors seized 21 cats and kittens from a single property in north-west Victoria, one of seven large-scale removals this year.

RSPCA Victoria’s Inspectorate is actively managing over 900 investigations statewide, working alongside local groups like South Gippsland Animal Aid to care for and rehome animals. The organization faces significant operational costs, estimated at over $12.8 million this financial year, to support shelter and veterinary care. The public is encouraged to report animal welfare concerns to RSPCA Victoria to help address ongoing issues related to animal cruelty and neglect.
