The RSPCA’s Ashley Heath Centre and other establishments across the UK are preparing to care for a large number of animals recovering from cruelty and neglect over the Christmas period, including around 1,000 dogs, 1,500 cats, 400 horses, and over 100 rabbits. Operating these centres on Christmas Day alone will cost more than £56,000, with total December expenses exceeding £1.5 million. Staff emphasize the ongoing challenges posed by an epidemic of animal abandonment and the urgent need to find permanent homes for rescued animals, despite efforts to make the festive season special for them.
Strictly Come Dancing judge and RSPCA ambassador Shirley Ballas visited the Millbrook Animal Centre to deliver gifts and thank staff and volunteers for their dedication during the holidays. She highlighted the extensive care provided by the RSPCA, from daily animal care to life-saving surgeries. Ballas also supports the RSPCA’s partnership with Omaze in their Million Pound House Draw, which guarantees a £1 million donation to the charity. These funds will enhance the RSPCA’s rehabilitation efforts, offering tailored physical, emotional, and behavioral support to neglected and abused animals.
