An investigation by RSPCA Tasmania into the treatment of three emaciated thoroughbred horses formerly owned by the late Vanessa Goodwin has concluded without charges being laid. The horses, named Missy, Rejoice, and Kim, were found starving in March 2024 at a property in Acton Park, where they were kept under an agistment arrangement after Goodwin’s death in 2018. Despite concerns raised by a part-time carer and neighbors about the horses’ deteriorating condition, the RSPCA decided not to pursue court proceedings after a thorough review.
The horses were rescued by Brightside Farm Sanctuary, but Kim was euthanased soon after due to her poor condition. Missy and Rejoice initially showed improvement but were later euthanased following a severe injury to one and their advanced age. The cousin who took ownership after Goodwin’s death expressed regret over the situation, citing environmental challenges and inadequate care. Brightside Farm Sanctuary’s owner described the euthanasia decision as very difficult and has yet to publicly announce it due to personal reasons.
