Eighty-year-old Richmond Park trainer Murray Pash, a passionate figure in harness racing, celebrated a win with Sargent Henry (Sky Major), the only horse he currently trains, at Patterson Park in Westport. The two-year-old, in just his fourth start, was expertly driven by Jim Curtin to a decisive victory. Pash, who began his racing career as a child and has won 20 races on the Coast, shared fond memories of his journey, including his first win in 1968 and notable horses he has trained, such as Macraider, who achieved significant success overseas.
Despite being in the later stages of his career, Pash remains dedicated to the sport and mentoring younger trainers like Steve and Tim Fensom. Although he had planned to retire at 80, the promising potential of Sargent Henry has motivated him to continue training until at least 85. The horse is owned by a group including Pash’s wife Cheryl, linking to a family legacy in racing through her father, Noel Berkett, a celebrated trainer.
