Rescuing Horses, Healing Hearts: The Story of the Anita Balog Memorial Angel Horse Foundation

After the death of his wife, Mike Balog started the “Anita Balog Memorial Angel Horse Foundation” in May 2023, with the goal of rescuing horses and using them in therapy to help people experiencing grief, disability, anxiety, trauma, and other conditions. Balog purchased a 14-acre farm south of Alpine to house the horses and has been working on building stalls and a riding arena. The foundation aims to show that horses have value and can be used as therapy animals.

The foundation addresses the issue of neglected and malnourished horses, which is a growing problem in the equine industry. Many horses are unwanted and end up being sent to slaughter in Mexico and Canada. Balog has rescued several horses, including some from a study at Sul Ross State University, and is working to rehabilitate them. The cost of caring for neglected horses is high, with expenses for veterinary services, vaccinations, hoof care, dental work, and blood tests.

Balog has faced challenges in raising funds and caring for the horses, and is seeking volunteers and donations to support the foundation. He hopes to find someone to take over the daily care of the horses so he can focus on grant writing and fundraising. Balog’s inspiration for the foundation comes from his wife, who was dedicated to community service. Those interested in volunteering or donating can visit the foundation’s website or contact Balog directly.
