Rescued Wildfire Horses Now Serve as Therapy Animals for Veterans in Scottsdale

Hunkapi Programs in Scottsdale rescued three horses—Presley, Patrick, and Phantom—that were displaced by wildfires in Los Angeles earlier this year. Originally saved from slaughter in Texas, these horses adapted to their new environment and have been fully trained as therapy animals to support first responders and veterans. The program helps individuals, including veterans like volunteer Grant, reconnect with themselves and find healing through interactions with the horses.

Grant, who served 11 years in Afghanistan, shares that working with the horses has helped him recognize and address his own emotional struggles, offering tools to overcome difficult experiences. The Scottsdale farm provides various therapeutic programs aimed at fostering mindfulness, freedom, and healing for participants. More information about Hunkapi Programs and their mission can be found on their website.
