Four donkeys—Buttons, Bueno, Yorkie, and Malteser—rescued from severe neglect on a Nottinghamshire farm are now thriving at Bransby Horses Rescue Centre in Lincoln. Seized during a large-scale operation involving over 450 animals living in squalid conditions, the donkeys have been cared for by the RSPCA and Bransby Horses, where they enjoy spacious grassy fields, enrichment activities, and social learning from older donkeys. The rescue followed the conviction of Lee Hayes, who received a prison sentence and lifetime animal ownership ban for 25 animal welfare offences.
Now around two years post-rescue, the donkeys have developed distinct, bold personalities and are described as an “instant hit” with staff and visitors. While Yorkie and Buttons are nearing readiness for rehoming, Bueno and Malteser require more time to recover. The donkeys’ playful nature and ongoing rehabilitation highlight the positive impact of dedicated rescue efforts following one of the RSPCA’s largest animal welfare interventions.
