Redwings Horse Sanctuary has taken in ten thoroughbreds following the prosecution of their owner for animal welfare offences, underscoring ongoing issues of equine neglect in the UK. Many of the horses arrived in critical condition, suffering from severe parasitic worm infestations and malnutrition, requiring urgent veterinary care including plasma transfusions. Among the initial group were four mares, some pregnant, with mixed outcomes for their foals—while one mare successfully gave birth, others sadly lost their foals or died due to health complications.
In February, Redwings received six more horses from the same case, including a stallion and several young colts, all needing intensive treatment and ongoing rehabilitation. The owner has been banned from keeping animals for life and given a suspended prison sentence. Redwings highlights the increasing strain on equine charities amid rising welfare cases and is appealing for public donations to support their vital work in rescuing and rehabilitating neglected horses.
