Over a 15-month period, more than 70 rare-breed Icelandic horses and foals were rescued from poor conditions in the South West through a coordinated welfare operation led by the RSPCA, The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, and World Horse Welfare. The horses were found in semi-feral herds suffering from unmanaged breeding, injuries, malnutrition, and high parasite burdens. With the owner’s cooperation, the animals were gradually removed under veterinary supervision and relocated to specialist care by summer 2025, with additional support from other charities providing transport and rehoming assistance.

The rescue, described as one of the most complex equine welfare cases in recent years, highlighted the importance of early intervention to prevent further suffering. While most horses are now recovering in sanctuaries across the UK, a few were humanely euthanised due to severe health issues. The charities involved have urged horse owners to seek help early and encouraged the public to report welfare concerns promptly to avoid similar situations in the future.
