Provincial Minister for Livestock and Agriculture Ashiq Hussain Kirmani chaired the inaugural meeting of the Technical Working Group focused on conserving and promoting local horse breeds in Punjab. Highlighting the provincial government’s new emphasis on indigenous horse breeds, Kirmani outlined plans to train veterinary officers, provide vaccines, and equip veterinary centers with ultrasound facilities. He stressed the need for collaboration between public and private sectors to develop a distinct local breed with standardized traits and announced a dedicated project offering advanced reproductive technologies and improved nutrition to support private breeders.
Secretary Livestock Ahmad Aziz Tarar emphasized ongoing efforts to preserve native horse breeds and enhance diagnostic services. The meeting addressed proposals such as documenting native horse traits, promoting quality breeding practices, and ensuring international recognition of local breeds. Experts highlighted the critical importance of maintaining detailed records of indigenous breeds to prevent their extinction and support sustainable development in the livestock sector.
